Customer story
A large US-based construction company needed to consolidate reporting across six disparate data sources — Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Oracle Warehouse, Yardi, Procore, and Azure Data Lakes — covering property information, project statuses, loan pipelines, revenues, expenditures, equity, and vendor management. We designed KPIs, built a data transformation layer, and embedded the Power BI reports in the client’s enterprise application with SSO and role-based access control.

The client
The client is a large construction company in the US.
The need
The customer had several systems under their portfolio and needed to evaluate property information, project statuses, loan statuses, pipelines, revenues from various sources, expenditures from several departments and types of expenses, equity trackers, pursuit reports, opportunities, and vendor management reports.
The challenge
The data sources for all the systems varied — Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Oracle Warehouse, Yardi, Procore, and Azure Data Lakes — leading to a complex data model architecture. Furthermore, the client was concerned with security and had a centralised data access and reporting application where the reports were to be individually embedded under the application’s own data model so that security-driven reporting could be done.
The solution
The solution design included defining and designing the key KPIs and reports, published on the cloud with integrations to the existing data sources. A data transformation layer was defined before feeding data from different sources into the Power BI dashboards, leading to a simplified process flow.
Each report was determined for its purpose, use cases, and KPIs from different client teams, requiring careful data modelling before visuals were created and integrated.
A transformation layer was built to normalise and prepare data from the six disparate sources before it entered Power BI.
Reports were embedded within the client’s enterprise application via embedded analytics using the App Owns Data model.
Security was driven by security groups within Azure AD and integrated with SSO for role-based access control. End users did not need to log in separately to access the reports.
Benefits
All data consolidated into Power BI dashboards, simplifying the reporting workflow.
