Azure Infrastructure Modernization for a 10,000-Employee Global Manufacturing Enterprise

A global manufacturing enterprise with over 10,000 employees, operating production facilities, supply chain networks, and corporate offices across North America, Europe, and Asia, needed to move beyond an on-premise data center model that was limiting scalability, driving up costs, and creating performance bottlenecks. We modernized their legacy IT infrastructure into a scalable, cloud-first architecture on Microsoft Azure, with governance, security, and disaster recovery built in from the start.

Azure Infrastructure Modernization for a 10,000-Employee Global Manufacturing Enterprise (3)

The client

A 10,000-employee global manufacturing enterprise

The client is a global manufacturing enterprise with over 10,000 employees, operating multiple production facilities, supply chain networks, and corporate offices across North America, Europe, and Asia. They partnered with Star Knowledge to modernize their legacy IT infrastructure and transition to a scalable, cloud-first architecture using Microsoft Azure.

The need

Moving beyond an on-premise model that couldn't keep up with growth

The client’s existing infrastructure relied heavily on on-premise data centers, limiting scalability, increasing operational costs, and creating performance bottlenecks. Their rapid expansion exposed the limits of this traditional infrastructure model, and the organization needed a modern, resilient, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure aligned with global manufacturing operations.

The challenge

Legacy systems, rising costs, and inconsistent security across global sites

Key challenges included heavy reliance on legacy on-premises systems and data centers, increasing infrastructure and maintenance costs, and limited scalability to support growing production and analytics workloads. Performance issues were affecting supply chain and operational systems, the client lacked a robust disaster recovery and business continuity strategy, security practices were inconsistent across global locations, and the organization was struggling to support remote access and modern workforce requirements.

The solution

A phased, governed migration to Azure, built by Azure-certified architects and cloud engineers

Star Knowledge assembled a team of Azure-certified architects, cloud engineers, and infrastructure specialists with deep experience in large-scale manufacturing and enterprise cloud transformations. The team conducted a comprehensive Azure readiness and infrastructure assessment, identified critical workloads, dependencies, and migration priorities, and designed a phased cloud migration roadmap aligned with the client’s business operations, with governance based on the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF).

01

Assessment & governance framework

Conducted a comprehensive Azure readiness and infrastructure assessment, identified critical workloads and migration priorities, and established governance based on the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), with architecture designed for scalability, performance, and high availability.

02

Workload migration & modernization

Migrated key workloads — including ERP systems, production applications, and databases — to Azure, implementing IaaS and PaaS models and optimizing compute, storage, and networking with Azure-native services, while enabling a hybrid architecture for a gradual transition from on-premise systems.

03

Risk mitigation & business continuity

Implemented backup and disaster recovery using Azure Site Recovery, established real-time monitoring with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics, designed failover strategies for business continuity, and coordinated migration waves with strict change management to avoid production disruptions.

04

Security, compliance & governance

Deployed Azure Security Center for threat detection and posture management, enforced identity and access controls with Azure Active Directory, standardized compliance frameworks across global environments, and enabled secure, segmented network architecture.

05

Ongoing optimization & support

Provided continuous Azure environment monitoring and optimization, cost management and resource utilization reporting, 24/7 global support for infrastructure and cloud services, and training and knowledge transfer for the client’s internal IT teams.
