In this model, data is processed locally, reducing the amount of data that needs to be transferred to the cloud for processing. This, in turn, reduces network latency and improves the speed of data processing. Edge computing is designed to handle real-time data processing requirements, making it ideal for IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and other applications that require low latency.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is a centralized computing model that stores and processes data in a network of remote servers, also known as the cloud. It allows users to access data and applications from anywhere with an internet connection, making it ideal for remote work, collaboration, and storage.

Edge computing processes data locally, reducing the amount of time it takes to process data. Cloud computing, on the other hand, processes data remotely, which can increase latency. This makes edge computing ideal for applications that require low latency, such as autonomous vehicles and IoT devices.


Security is a major concern for both edge computing and cloud computing. Edge computing can be more secure than cloud computing because data is processed locally, reducing the risk of data breaches. However, edge devices may be more vulnerable to physical attacks, making them less secure than cloud servers.

Cloud computing, on the other hand, is more susceptible to cyber-attacks because data is stored in remote servers. However, cloud providers typically have strong security measures in place to protect against cyber-attacks.


Scalability is another key difference between edge computing and cloud computing. Cloud computing allows users to scale up or down resources quickly and easily, making it ideal for businesses with fluctuating workloads. Edge computing, on the other hand, has limited resources and is not easily scalable.

Data processing involves collecting and manipulating digital data to generate meaningful information. Any changes to the information that can be noticed by an observer are considered data processing.

Edge computing focuses on processing data quickly and in larger quantities close to where it is generated, resulting in real-time solutions that prompt action. Compared to traditional models that centralize processing power in an on-premise data center, edge computing has unique characteristics. It is known for its deterministic behavior, which sets it apart from cloud services that lack real-time guarantees and can display non-deterministic performance due to shared computing and network resources.

Edge Computing vs Cloud Computing: Which one should you choose?

Understanding the difference between edge computing and cloud computing, which cannot be substituted for one another, is essential. Edge computing is ideal for applications that require low latency, such as autonomous vehicles and IoT devices, as well as for applications that require real-time data processing. On the other hand, cloud computing is better suited for applications that require high storage capacity and can handle batch processing.

In some cases, a hybrid model that combines both technologies may be the best solution. This model combines the benefits of both technologies, allowing data to be processed locally when low latency is required, and processed in the cloud when high storage capacity is needed.
